About the Erie County (Pennsylvania) Historical Society
In 1899 Erie’s first public museum was created at the public Library for collecting pieces of local history and natural history. Four years later Erie County Historical Society was founded in 1903 to “promote the study of local history and collect and preserve the records there [of].” The Society has a 117-year successful track record of collecting and preserving Erie County history.
Following decades of growth and change as separate institutions in January, 2000 the Erie Historical Museum merged with the Erie County Historical Society to function as a single (501©3) private, non-profit organization. ECHS provides exhibits, educational programs, archival and library services, publications, and museum-related programs. It currently serves as Erie County’s primary center for local and regional history and general Lake Erie maritime history.
Erie County Historical Society, recently concluded a significant $3.5 million upgrade and expansion, the result of a successful capital campaign at the Thomas B. Hagen History Center, 356 West 6th Street on Millionaires’ Row in Erie, PA. Extensive work was performed on the Watson-Curtze Mansion, a Richardsonian-Romanesque style home, initially built in 1891.
The expansion includes the renovation of the Carriage House. The sales shop, work area, meeting room, staff offices and reading room with research access are now located in the Carriage House. A Connector building has been added for work space and bathrooms. The King-Mertens Archival Storage Building, a new 10,000 sq. ft. humidity and temperature controlled facility for 9,200+ linear ft. of 2-d collections including 312,775+ images with 30,000 glassplate negatives, 4,880 architectural plans and drawings, 5,529+ books, and other resources are being moved to the new building.
